October 28, 2003 - 10:57 AM Am I in an Upswing? Just a little quickie update. RF is finally back at the studio, so I'll be working today! I don't know how long he plans on staying, but let's cross our fingers and hope that it's for at least the next week. Yesterday I opted to go to the Knitting Factory to see one of my co-worker's bands (Stereofiend) perform in a battle of the bands kind of show. Except for the them, the lineup was fairly horrible. Well, not horrible...just, um, adequate, which isn't what I pay for when I go to see a show. Sunday, Nick, his roomie LDBL, and I swung by the Hotel Cafe for to see former Letters to Cleo frontwoman Kay Hanley with Michael Eisenstein. She played a too short set of only her solo stuff, which was still pretty good. There were two acts before her, a guy named Kid Lightning who had some above average stuff, and a guy whose name I think is Chris Siffredi who I actually enjoyed. After Kay, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine did a solo set. I think he was trying very hard to channel The Man in Black, Johnny Cash, even going so far as to adopt the stagename of The Night Watchman. He didn't rock my world, unfortunately, as his singing/talking performance wasn't too strong, and his lyrics were sorta feeble, even though they tried to be all dark and important. Saturday, Nick, LDBL, LDBL's girlfriend Mer, and me went out drinking at the Cat and the Fiddle pub in Hollywood. Ate Scotch Eggs (boiled egg wrapped in a yummy sausage), drank beers and ciders and Irish Car Bombs and Mer had Prairie Fires, then played darts. Good, relaxing night. Earlier in the day, Nick took me to a work-related screening of the new Will Farrell movie ELF. Very funny, heart-warming movie. I think it'll do big business, and I recommend it to all my readers. Yup, even you in the back who's fallen asleep. Just a reminder to those of you on the east coast, Vienna Teng and Kyler England will be playing somewhere near you starting this Thursday, so check out their tourdates and go see these fabulous ladies!
