February 14, 2004 - 6:39 AM Sunrise, To Bed It's 6:30 in the A.M., and I am chasing Night home, with sherbert swirls sweeping up behind me, pulling a fiery blanket of turqouises and aquamarines with them. The blue-grey darkness ahead of me, which comfortingly reminds me of New England winters, melts farther and farther away. The sun still sits beyond the horizon, but the strands of premonition which paint the dawn through my rear window are bright and pure; I wish they would hold that way for a while longer, with the empty streets so quiet and the world so calm. Even though the fact that I've driven the commute home at this time the past two days means that I'm working long hours and not getting enough sleep, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. It's thrilling and humbling; it pulls at my soul and nearly moves me to tears. I'm suddenly 8 again, in our living room, listening to the Sunrise Movement from The Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofe, a piece of music that so wonderfully evokes the majesty of this time of day; I'm 11, and visiting the Grand Canyon itself with my family; I'm 14, and driving cross-country for 3 weeks with my brother and sister; I'm 19, and meandering the states for 2 months by myself. It's every hiking trip I've experienced, every dawn and every dusk, all the magical moments where nature reminds us that it is beautiful, and the world, for just a few moments, seems perfect. Today, I must return to the studio at noon to continue on a session. I do not know when I will be done; we have been so busy, I actually worked on two different, consecutive sessions in a room that was double-booked last night, and may very well do the same tonight. Many artists and producers are in town because of the NBA All-Star game, and they are trying to get some work done in between all the parties that are happening. I'm crossing my fingers in the hopes that I will have Sunday evening off so that I may go see a man named Paul Schwartz at the Hotel Cafe. He has done a number of albums that remodel classical opera arias into ambient easy-listening electronica grooves that I think are quite good. I'm interested to see how it comes across in a live setting. Oh, and Monday night, Kyler England and Adrianne (who I've been recording) are returning to the Hotel Cafe for an 8 PM show. Come join us if you are free. Now Listening To : Eleanor McEvoy-Snapshots Random Thought : Yesterday, I pulled up next to the trailer/truck for the TLC show Clean Sweep, and I got that giddy "ooh celebrity!" feeling.
