January 21, 2005 - 11:50 AM Oh My Starrs and Garters I'm not a big fan of spoken word poetry performance and, perhaps by extension, rap. And I'm not one who gets behind feminism or any -ism where stridency is used to cow me (yeah yeah, the stereotypes of feminists or environmentalists or whatever-ists are not the yardstick by which the belief systems should be judged, and sure there are salient points that drive each -ism: I just don't like the accusatory nature, inflammatory rhetoric, and the shame-on-you tones of voices that I get from the proponents of the -istic causes). That being said, next Tuesday, y'all should join me at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood at 8, because this woman named Kinnie Starr is performing. Her style covers rock, folk, hip-hop, rap, spoken-word, funk, and more. I've only seen her twice in concert, back in '97, but she knocked my socks off with her feral, entrancing, sexy, groove-laden performance so much that I'm almost ecstatic at the thought of seeing her again next week. She has the early slot (8 PM) that night, which means she probably won't have too big an audience for her show. That'll be incentive for some of you who don't like having to deal with throngs of people. This weekend, I'm doing sound at the theater for some fitness competition. Don't ask me, I don't book these gigs. I'll let you know if anything interesting happens, like, say, me getting pile-driven by some titanic teuton who doesn't appreciate my sarcastic remark about his man-boobs.
