June 23, 2006 - 4:06 PM So, What Are You Doing This Weekend? "So, what are you doing this weekend?" And with those words, choirs of angels burst into harmonious "aaaahs", then started dancing happy little jigs and hoedowns and robots in my heart. Because it was a GIRL who asked me that. A cute girl. Dare I say, a PRETTY girl. A girl who it turned out only had Saturday available because Friday night she was going to the Dodgers game (Me-"Who are they playing?" Her-"Pittsburgh" *rueful smile from me* Her-"Well, I like it when we're pretty assured of getting a win"), and had a sotfball game on Sunday (her team is in the playoffs). Admittedly, she isn't a good softball player, she just likes the running-around-outdoors aspect of it. But c'mon. She knows enough about baseball that she foresees a win by the Dodgers against the woeful Pirates. So, who is she? This girl who asked ME what I was doing this weekend? And when did this happen? She is one of the handful of girls that I had emailed on Friendster. And she was the only one who responded. I had remarked on her listing of the game Upwords as a Favorite Thing, seeing as how I thought it was a pretty obscure game. She came back by telling me that she thinks Totoro is the shit. And we went back and forth, giving props on each other's profiles, before I suggested she re-teach me how to play Upwords. When she responded by asking what my week (this past week) looked like, I informed her how packed it was with work and concerts and suggested she maybe try to catch one of the shows with me. And so, she came down to the Hotel Cafe on Wednesday, met me by the soundboard, and cracked a few jokes about the forest of tall people in front of us. She'd been meaning to see a show at the Hotel for awhile, but this was her first time there, and she liked the venue. As we watched Schuyler Fisk perform, we exchanged a few grins and some more pokes at the giants, but couldn't really hold a conversation. Afterwards, she mentioned that she was craving one of those new Snapple White Tea drinks, which lead to us walking a few blocks around Hollywood, trying to find a market that sold it. And we talked as we walked and had fun, goofy conversations. Then we got to my car and talked some more. It was when we could both sense that the night was coming to a close that she popped the question. And I was happy that she was showing an interest because I liked her and I didn't want to seem too forward or too eager by asking her. Tomorrow, we'll be having a picnic in the park, and we're going to play Upwords and maybe Scrabble and also possibly Battleship. And even if that's dorky, that's my kind of dorky.
