On TV

Did you guys see that one of the contestants on American Idol was named Paul Kim? Thank god he got kicked off. We can't have two Paul Kims floating around this town. Strangely, I probably stood next to him at one point. If you were watching the first Hollywood episode of AI, the male contestants visited the Simpsons movie production facilities and had the movie trailer screened for them. My job that day was to make sure that the trailer reel was safely and securely transported from the post-production office to the theater and back, and that the screening went off smoothly. I was in the theater as they watched the trailer and when the director talked to them about the movie. You just didn't see me because I was behind one of the cameramen.

Speaking of tv shows, have you guys been watching Heroes? Wow, these last two episodes rocked my little bitty socks. Certainly made up for the lackluster efforts in January and February. Perhaps on second viewing on DVD, when I have the luxury of being able to zip through several episodes in one sitting, those middling episodes won't seem so aimless or plodding. Maybe I'll be able to see an over-arcing flow that carried across multiple episodes that wasn't as easily detectable from week to week; perhaps all that setup will feel more suspenseful and impactful with previous episodes more freshly in mind.

Wow, though. They sure delivered with these two episodes. Payoff after payoff, with new intrigues seeded in. I realize that you can't have a satisfactory payoff without first laying the foundation, which can take time; and conversely, it can become tiresome if EVERY week you're trying to have a big payoff that involves a new twist or explosive answer...a good serialized story will develop its storylines and characters at a proper pace. The first chunk of Heroes did this with aces last fall; this second chunk required more patience, i think, on the viewers part. We'll see if the last bit later this spring makes it all come together.

I've been watching a little bit of TV here and there beyond Heroes, but not much. Occasionally, I'll watch House with Liz (Dave Matthews did a fine job in this week's episode); I've caught a few episodes of What About Brian, mostly because new guest star Stacey Keibler is gorgeous (and she's from Maryland!); and dropped in on NBC's new Thursday comedy lineup which seems to be getting stronger and weaker at the same time. Scrubs, what is wrong with you? 30 Rock, why are you so funny all of a sudden? The Office? I need to rent the first two seasons on DVD to catch up on all the episodes I missed of you. I'm sorry. Let me hug you.
