A Girl, Old Friends, And Other Assorted Tidbits

Is there something wrong with me if, when it rains, I'm wondering if the flooding is a sign of the apocalypse? With all the crazy shit going on in the world recently, I've been keen on interpreting any new bad developments (FLU! RAIN! POLITICAL TURMOIL! PICKLE JAR LID STUCK!) as being portents of our global demise. And not in a fearful way, but more in a "geeze, when are the locusts gonna get here?", resigned what-the-hell kinda way. I'm certainly not falling to my knees and railing about hellfire and brimstone and judgement. In fact, I think a little part of me is looking forward to it, if it does indeed come. Ah, the Rapture.

For those of you Scott Speedman fans who are looking for my brief account of my sighting of him, that would be the previous entry, not this one. And, yes, I should amend my statement that he is a "C-level" star. Certainly, if anything, he is B-level: co-starred in a show that helped kick-off and establish the brand-identity of a network; co-starred in a pedigreed "indie" movie with an ensemble of top-notch actors (hello giamatti, braugher, and bello); co-starred in a moderate sci-fi hit.

He's like the Underworld equivalent of Carrie-Anne Moss, if you think about it. The werewolf Trinity to Kate Beckinsale's Neo in an underbudgeted (Underworld was made for a reported 22 mil, while the Matrix was made for 60 mil, both small potatoes compared to other FX driven action flicks) but profitable-enough-to-warrant-sequels movie that garnered a large cult following.

I saw Wallace and Gromit Saturday night. Could it be that for the second year in a row, my favorite movie OF the year turns out to be a "kids flick"? That may very well be the case. Funny as hell, very cute, and awfully clever. Mark had warned me in all seriousness that it had some racy stuff in it that I should be careful of, but I have no idea what he was talking about. It wasn't spicy at all, barely even saucy, more like a gravy. Then again, Mark said the girl I saw the movie with looooooooved me, and that is plainly not true, so what does he know?

What, "a girl?" you say? Yeah, she's a recent Amherst grad I met at the young alumni gathering last month. Very into artsy culture and indie pizazz, and seems to have a fetish for all things cello. So we hit it off and have been trying to figure out stuff to do since then. No idea if there's a romantic angle involved; just doing the friend thing. Before the screening (which was one of the Arclight's awesome "21+" showings where you can take alcohol into the theater), we shopped at Amoeba Records next door for, like, an hour. For those of you who think I'm all knowledgeable about indie music, this girl probably has me beat, hands down. She was the Amherst radio station program director, for pete's sake.

Two other things: she knows Frank Park, and she's Korean.

Old friends are coming out of the woodwork. While roaming the classical/jazz section at Amoeba, I ran into Paul Lee, one of the guys I used to work with at one of the studios. He could do the best FOB (fresh off the boat) korean/american accents ever. Had me and another asian guy that worked nights with us in stitches all the time. I hadn't seen Paul in probably a year and a half. Very random to run into him there.

Just got a call from my friend Xochitl today, who is back in L.A. for a few months after having spent much of this year in Colombia. She studied Anthropology at USC, then did her graduate work at the U of Michigan. Now she's doing field work in South America. I'll be very happy to get the chance to hang out with this smart girl soon.

I also had drinks with Flori on Friday night after seeing Amy Cooper at the Hotel Cafe. We caught up on stuff, talked about working in the entertainment industry, and made fun of people.

Yes, I had alcohol last week, after promising that I wouldn't taste a drop until reunion. Bite me.

My friend Charlotte, who traveled all over China for a month earlier this year, just emailed me. Another person with whom I'll have to catch up.

I've finally gotten copies of Victoria's Ukulele album. Very nice. There's a new A&E show called Random One that will be featuring one of the songs in an upcoming episode. Woo! And the guys who produced the show are from Baltimore!

Random Thought : Who wants a copy of Victoria's album?
