October 09, 2003 - 4:58 AM 9.79 Seconds is Fnarking Fast You know how in my last entry I bemoaned (ok, ok, whined about) the activity of running? Well, isn't it interesting that the session on which I worked today was for Maurice Greene's new enterprise. "Maurice who?" you may ask. Maurice Greene. Fastest Man Ever. Well, at least, the fastest man in the 100 meters (9.79 seconds). Also, the man whose face and physique are plastered on a banner right above the free weights at my gym, urging high schoolers to try out the gym for free (as long as their varsity coaches give 'em permission). I guess Mo is looking to branch out and really loves music, so he's working with some veterans of the business to start up his own company. I'm not sure if they're looking to be an artist management company, or a production company, or an independent label, or what; but they were working on a song for this high school senior rapper called "Amazing" (gag me with a spoon). Mo was pretty nice and fairly involved in the process, offering opinions on lyrics and delivery/flow. Unfortunately, Mo and his people didn't establish a food account through the studio (usually, the client will pre-authorize a certain amount of money for the session to use for whatever they wish, usually food, for the day; the studio fronts the cash, then bills the client at the end of the session); thus, I had to buy dinner for myself. Bah. But I did get a VERRRY tasty pepperoni calzone. Best calzone I ever had was at Amherst. A place called D.P. Doughs. They delivered really late (like, past 1 AM, I think) and they had this awesome BBQ Chicken Calzone whose match I have not tasted since. Ahhh, Amherst, also home of the best pizza I've ever had. If you've been there, you know what I'm talking about. Antonio's. They make all these semi-gourmet pizzas and you can get 'em all by the slice. The fresh tomato, basil, mozarella cheese slice is heavenly. Phil, if you're reading this, go watch Glengarry Glen Ross again. I seem to remember that you saw it way back when and you didn't like it one bit, but I think that if you were to watch it now, you'd get a kick out of it. As I watched it, with all the sales talk, the smooth patter, the finessing and finagling, I thought that that must be part of what your job is like. I hope that you're as good as Alec Baldwin. Know what? I actually read a new book. Finished it too. I haven't done that in YEARS. It's called "Moneyball", written by Michael Lewis, who is Tabitha Soren's hubby. Not the best written book out there (he kept throwing me by switching verb tenses), but still an interesting look at why the Oakland A's have been successful the past couple years (although he doesn't explain why they've choked in the playoffs). Maybe it's time to read The Westing Game again. Now Listening To : Bic Runga-Beautiful Collision Random Thought : Good bye peaches, hello apple cider!
