Family Bidness

Congratulations to cousin Jimmy and his wife Sue on their one year wedding anniversary. Oh, yeah, and something about a baby, too. I think they had one of those things. Recently. Maybe.

Just kidding. About the "maybe" part, not the kid part. No kidding about the kid. Although, dissemination of the news seemed to be a clandestine affair, with only a few people hearing tell of the birth of a son named Julian while the rest of us were left to stumble about in the dark. Every so often, one of us would mutter, "Hey, didn't Sue get pregnant pretty soon after the wedding? Isn't she due at some point? And where are my pants?" before the topic fell from memory.

(By the way, i never did finish my tale of how their wedding went in Florida last year. Nor did I do a write-up on LDBL and Mer's wedding, or Tony and Margaret's. Sorry guys. I have rough draft beginnings on those, but who knows when I'll get around to actually doing them.)

I had received news of this baby, this son, this scion of the Whangs, a few weeks ago from Tony. Margaret had been emailed by Sue about the baby, who had been born towards the beginning of March, I believe, but none of the other cousins knew. It was revealed that word had then trickled out to Matt and Sharon two weeks ago when we all went out to see V for Vendetta. Still, it was a month and a half before the rest of the family was notified last week via email WITH PICTURES (hooray!) about Julian's arrival.

At dinner before we saw V, there was discussion about the name of the boy. Jimmy's brother Eddie had expressed, um...displeasure at the name Julian (or so Tony reports). This moved on to the rumor that Sue might go hyphenate with her last name, making it Laguna-Whang. Recalling an earlier conversation about Eddie dating a korean girl currently, I pulled out a little nugget that had Matt rolling in the aisles..of the...imaginary church in which we were not sitting...I...uh...hmm. Crap. That last bit of writing kinda got away from me. Sorry. At least I didn't say he was ROFLing. I hate that acronym, and I know most of you do too. Seriously, are you really rolling on the floor while laughing? And are you 2 years old? Maybe you need to wear this straight jacket, too. Although, Nick and Mark, in their wonderfully snarky way, have turned it into an enjoyable thing by verbalising it as if they were the Hamburgler (instead of saying "robble robble robble" you say "rofl rofl rofl" [pronounced 'rah full'])

Where was I? Oh, right, my funny. So, I asked the group if Eddie's girlfriend's last name was Chung. They said no, but couldn't remember what it was exactly. Matt immediately put two and two together, and replied that if it was Chung, the two of them should have a kid and name it "Everybody".

Now who's the two year old? That's right, it's me and Matt.

My cousin Carol is staying with me for the next two weeks. She had a church conference here from Wednesday to Sunday last week, and is now taking a two week course at a seminary in Pasadena. As "payment" for letting her stay at my place, she brought a bunch of korean food from Vegas and has been cooking me meals which is awesome because she LOOOOOVES to eat meat. I think we're gonna go to costco to buy some steaks later on.

Also, she's going to put me on her "family" list which would allow me to fly anywhere that America West flies for a pittance (rules and restrictions apply, must be 18 years or older, monkeys must be accompanied by a dwarf and two hamsters). I'd have to do it as a standby passenger, but, hey, if I don't have to pay 300 bucks to go coast to coast, and all it requires is for me to bum around the terminal until a seat opens up, then I'm all good.

Know what's funny (or sad, depending on your viewpoint)? I've been living out here 5 years now, and she has more friends around L.A. than I do. We went down to Hermosa Beach yesterday to play volleyball with some of her friends, and she's got dinner plans with other friendsfor later this week, plus another guy is offering to take her to a photo gallery exhibition downtown. She's a popular girl.
