September 02, 2003 - 4:18 PM A Little Death Comes Into My Life Well that certainly was interesting. I was to work on a session today at 11 AM, so i got up at 9, dropped off my rent check, dropped off Old School at Blockbuster, and waltzed in to the studio at 10. After waiting around for an hour (and discovering my new, mega-money paycheck waiting in my box), I was told that the session was postponed until tomorrow, which left me with a whole day to waste. My cousin Tony had offered me two tickets to see the Dodgers face the Houston Astros for the night, pending my having to NOT work, and I thought that I'd now be able to take him up on them. However, fortune was not to be on my side. After depositing my paycheck into my starving bank account, I got in my car for the fourth time today, and cranked the engine. Only, it wouldn't turn over. Lights kept blinking, a strange clicking sound came from under the console, but the car refused to go vroom. Distraught, I fumbled in the glove compartment for the car manual, and scoured the section on Fuses. The next ten minutes were spent locating the two fuse boxes (one under the hood, one under the steering column), checking each of the fuses (all were ok), and cursing the gods under my breath. Exhausting the possibility that a fuse was the culprit, I flipped to the "what to do when some part of your car isn't working" section. Under the "you know your battery is dead when..." header, there were some car symptoms that seemed to apply to my situation. I went through their steps to test the battery and came to the conclusion that, yes, my 2 year old car had somehow killed its own battery. I was lucky enough to snag one of the service people in the parking lot who had a starter battery for such occasions (although the help desk people in the lot couldn't offer me help because of the company's policies or some such dreck), and he gave me a jump start. Scurrying my ass out of there, I prayed all the way to my Honda service station. The technician there took a look and a listen, and said "yep, looks like the battery's dead. We can have it ready by 3." Happy to pay the 140 bucks it would take to bring my baby back to life, I walked the 15 minutes home to eat some lunch and putz around on the 'net until it was ready. The sun? It's really hot. Another 15 minute walk back to the Service place, and my car was rip-roarin' ready to go. They were even nice enough to wash the grime off of it. She looks so purty now. But we're gonna have to have a talk about why she was sippin' so much juice outta the battery. I can't figure out why it went dry in only 2 years. Oh, and if anyone is curious as to what I did with my weekend, I worked Thursday through Saturday; Sunday had a little party with my cousins (two of whom were visiting from NYC) and, you guessed it, played games; Monday had dinner with Tony and his much MUCH better half Margaret (who we all love and adore), then watched Office Space.
